About this Event

This is an exceptional opportunity to learn from the master in a small group where audience participation will be encouraged.  Not only is Tim O’Hare one of the most highly regarded authorities on soils in the industry, he is also a very engaging speaker.  On this occasion he will be focusing specifically on those aspects of soil which are most relevant to the garden designer, including:

  • essential soil properties and structure;
  • sampling methods and important parameters to test for;
  • how and where technical equipment, information and analysis services can be sourced.

More than a lecture, Tim will be bringing soil samples for an identification challenge and there will be opportunity in the afternoon for some hands-on practice of using a soil sampling auger.

The day will include an informal nursery walk and light buffet lunch.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Tim acquired his BSc (Hons) in Geography and an MSc in Soil Science from Reading University. His career started at the small west London soil testing laboratory, Dr. Augustus Voelcker, where he became Senior Soil Scientist in two years. He went on to become Director at Soil and Land Consultants before setting up Tim O’Hare Associates in 2006.

Tim is a Member of the Institute of Professional Soil Scientists, the British Society of Soil Science, the British Institute of Agricultural Consultants and the Science Council. He is an Affiliate Member of the Landscape Institute. He has sat on the BSI working group AW20, which is responsible for the British Standard for Topsoil (BS3882), since 2005 and was co-author of DEFRA’s Code of Practice for the Sustainable Use of Soils on Constructions Sites (2009).
