Event description

Description

This 1 day workshop will introduce you to the two basic techniques used for solar plate etching - single and double exposure.

A solar plate (or photopolymer plate) is a steel plate coated with a light sensitive polymer layer. The plate is exposed to uv light (weather permitting using natural sunlight) and washed out in water. This environmentally friendly printmaking technique can be used to produce images that can be printed in both intaglio and relief using hand drawn images, photographs, natural materials, photocopies etc as the starting point to making a plate.

During the 1 day workshops students will

  • make up to 3 plates (sized approx 10 x 15cm) using single and double exposure techniques.
  • learn how to ink, wipe and print the plate
  • learn how to clean and store the plate
  • learn the best papers to use
  • find out about buying supplies

All materials provided but students should bring along some monochrome, tonal images measuring 10 x 15cm printed on acetate to use for their work.

Suitable for beginners and those with some experience.
