About this event
Dr Firdaus Muhammad-Sukki
Dr. Muhammad-Sukki (PhD, CEng, MIET, ACGI) is a lecturer at the School of Engineering and Built Environment, Edinburgh Napier University. His research interest is in the area of renewable energy technology and policies and sustainable resources. He has carried out a number of non-technical research including market trend and financial analysis related to renewable technologies for various countries. He has published numerous articles in high impact factor journals (e.g. Nature, Renewable & Sustainable Energy Reviews, Applied Energy, etc.), as well as presenting in various conferences related to his area.
About the talk
Solar energy has a vast potential energy output and electricity can be generated by the use of a solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Concentrating PV has been designed by several researchers with the aim of lowering the PV system’s cost especially for developing countries. By using a concentrator, the use of expensive PV material can be reduced without compromising the electrical output generated from the panel. This talk will showcase some of the work carried out by Dr Muhammad-Sukki on a novel concentrating photovoltaic design which was granted an EU patent recently. This concentrator has the potential to be integrated in window to produce a smart window that generates electricity. The concentrator has a high enough gain to ensure that it could reduce the usage of PV material and eventually minimise the overall cost of implementation while delivering a similar electrical output as a conventional non-concentrating PV system. It is envisioned that this new concentrator has the potential to become an alternative for the traditional PV design to achieve a net-zero energy building.
