Eligibility for a funded training place

This training has been funded by Public Health at Brighton & Hove City Council. To be eligible for a funded place you need to be working in the Brighton & Hove area with people in vulnerable or high risk groups. As a guide, training places are initially limited to 3 places per course, per organisation. However, for larger organisations further places may be available.

The following exclusion criteria apply to eligibility for funded places:

  • People not working or volunteering within Brighton & Hove City (City boundary here)
  • Staff working in traditional Adult Social Care roles
  • Employees of Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust

If you are unsure about your eligibility for a funded place, or would like further information please contact Grassroots Suicide Prevention directly.

Eligibility for North West Sussex Suicide Prevention conference discounted tickets

Limited time offer for attendees of the North West Sussex Suicide Prevention conference on 15 January 2019.

Course Content

During the workshop you will have an opportunity to explore any personal or professional experiences with suicide. You will also have space to examine your own attitudes about suicide and people who are at risk of suicide. Space is allowed to focus on how your experiences with suicide impact on your beliefs and attitudes about using suicide first aid.

You will also have an opportunity to better understand the needs of a person at risk of suicide and how to use suicide first aid to meet those needs.

Some of the learning will take place in the whole group of participants and some in smaller workgroups. You will learn and practice a model of suicide intervention.

Your workshop trainers will be available to offer support and will work hard to create a learning atmosphere where participants can also encourage and support each other and have some fun.

The workshop can be tiring and it is important you try to leave the evenings free to relax. Participants from previous courses have suggested that we let future participants know how tiring the course can be, so please do plan some time for you before and after the course.

Timings & Breaks

The course runs from 9:30am to 5:30pm on both days. It is essential that you attend both days for the full duration. Please arrive promptly in the morning – we promise to finish on time!  We will have an hour lunch break on both days and we try to have two short breaks each morning and afternoon.

Lunch will NOT be provided, so please bring your own or visit the nearby shops and cafes in the area. Tea and coffee will be provided during break times.

  • If you are unable to attend due to illness you will need to send us a copy of a medical certificate for cancellation fees to be waived.
  • Delegate substitutions can be made at any time without charge.

1. Paying Places

Cancellation with more than 4 weeks’ notice – 10% charge
Cancellation with 1-4 weeks’ notice – 50% charge
Less than 1 week’s notice – no refund

2. Public Health Brighton & Hove City Council Funded Places

If you have been allocated a Public Health Brighton & Hove City Council funded place it is our policy to charge a fee (currently £50 for ASIST) for non-attendance with less than one week’s notice. This is because there are certain costs that we incur in organising the course and these are non-refundable at short notice. We have introduced this policy because if we are unable to demonstrate good attendance to our funders it will be more difficult to secure future funding for these courses.

Whole Courses

Whole Courses can be a cost-effective way of training your team in your own venue. If your organisation is based in Brighton & Hove and works with at risk target groups we may be able to offer a discount based on the allocation of funded places. Please contact us to discuss your exact training needs, and possible discounts and funding options.

Grassroots Suicide Prevention

Grassroots Suicide Prevention delivers training that saves lives. Very few, if any of us, are untouched by suicide. We believe that suicide is a community health problem and that suicide can be prevented.

We promote and deliver ASIST (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training), a 2 day workshop that teaches a model of suicide first aid.

We offer a range of training programmes to complement ASIST, including SafeTALK (Suicide Alertness), One in Four (Mental Health Awareness) and Self Injury (Understanding & Working with Self Injury).

We are very happy to deliver courses in-house to your organisation; please ring or e-mail us to find out more.
