About this event

Ceramic poppy workshop in a historic World War One venue

In this 80th anniversary year of VE Day and VJ Day, Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome is offering the opportunity to attend a very special workshop, to craft your own beautiful and poignant symbol of remembrance.

Inspired by the art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, which placed 888,246 ceramic poppies in the grounds of the Tower of London in 2014, each representing a military life lost during WW1, local ceramic artist Jenny Owen will talk you through how to create your very own poppy sculpture in clay.

Suitable for both beginners and more experienced crafters, the step-by-step instructions in this small class event, available either morning or afternoon on Saturday 4 October, will enable each attendee to discover their creativity and craft a unique and beautiful reminder of this special anniversary year to treasure for a lifetime.

During the 90-minute class you will craft your own ceramic poppy, with all tools and materials provided. After the class, Jenny will fire, glaze, fire again and pack each poppy carefully in a presentation box ready for you to collect from the Museum at your convenience from 31 October, during normal opening hours. You will also receive an attractive and robust green garden stake that will attach to your poppy, allowing you to display it in the garden.

Whether you want to honour the memory of a special family member, or simply decorate your home with beautiful autumnal colours, this ceramic poppy workshop will enable you to create something truly special and unique.

Taking place in the historic surroundings of The Airmen’s Mess café, once the focal point of military life at Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome, your workshop fee includes a choice of hot drink and a piece of delicious home-made cake, with additional food and drinks available to purchase. Suitable for age 14+, the workshop costs £49 – book online now as places are limited.

All proceeds from the workshop help to support our charity, preserving the legacy of Stow Maries Great War Aerodrome for future generations. Registered Charity 1151099
