Son of Dave (Benjamin Darvill, Crash Test Dummies) - a modern funky one-man blues beat-box harmonica eruption! Expect some mighty-fine lo-fi country/folk replete with much foot-stomping, harmonica-strewn and idiosyncracies from this one man band.
Relying heavily on 12-bar blues and huskily intoned lyrics about wayward teens (She Just Danced All Night) and busted sets of vintage wheels (Broke-down Lincoln) over stripped-down shuffling, it’s pretty obvious that Darvill isn’t particularly concerned with reinventing the musical wheel. That said, there is something terribly satisfying about the primitive nature of his yelps and purrs and the relentless pounding of the lo-fi drumbeat. Every song seems to have been infused with a steamy, clandestine hoe-down atmosphere, making for an intimate live show than they do a slickly produced album.
Son of Dave says that people often ask him, “What kind of bluesman comes from Winnipeg in Canada, but has lived in London for more than 15 years? What kind of bluesman doesn’t abandon his illegitimate children to go adventuring?”
You might also ask, “What kind of bluesman has a YouTube channel, on which he posts covers of improbable songs like ‘Bonkers’ by Dizzee Rascal and anarchically reviews the latest singles by Beyoncé, Stooshe and Kendrick Lamar?”
On his fifth album, Blues At The Grand, his a-list friends have joined the party. Producer Jimmy Hogarth – a rhythm and blues fan with writing and production credits on countless monster-smashes by the likes of Amy Winehouse, James Morrison, Duffy and Corrine Bailey Rae -- is mixing cocktails, while drummer Joey Waronker (Beck, REM) is in the ballroom and award winning UK comedian/actress Jessica Hynes is flirting with the bellboy.
For the first time with Son of Dave it’s a full-band record and, as the bluesman is happy to admit, it is his most joyous to date. Blues At The Grand was released worldwide on 4th November last year.
S.O.D. has also gone deep into Karmic debt with his musician friends, who have stepped up and played incredible parts on this record. Henry Olsen (Screamadelica) on bass.
On lady vocals, Martina Topley Bird, Josephine Oniyama, Jessica Hynes, Naomi Yhap. On keys, Will Foster (Fratellis), horns by Martin Slatterly and Greg Heath. Son of Dave plays everything else including piano, bass, guitar, beats de la bouche and harmonica of course.

S.O.D. will have the support of Grant Sharkey tonight!
On May 6th 2013 he released '1/40' - it's called 1/40 because it is the first album of 40 he plans to release.
He will release each album 6 months apart in May and November every year between 2013 and 2033.
Eventually they will start to tell the story of a journey through time as he tries his best to live a life that is good and solid, and most of all, not at all dull.
Music is all he knows and the big businesses are trying to kill it. Thinking is all his brain wants to do and big business is trying to kill that too.
So, he's renouncing all of that stuff. No middlemen, no record companies.
Just trying to get out to as many people as possible through music, respect and support from those that find him worth supporting.
