Join the Jewish Council of Scotland as we gather together to celebrate the latest Shabbat of the year. We will build a campfire together and cook our Shabbat meal over it, followed by an exploration of how we use the sun, moon and seasons to guide our cycle of Jewish life, and a musical Kabbalat Shabbat service full of singing around the campfire. As the sun begins to set, we'll light our Shabbat candles and celebrate the transition as we welcome the latest Shabbat of the year.

Note - the donation option only allows for one donation per booking. If booking for multiple people, please enter the total donation amount when booking. After payment, it will ask you how many adults and how many childre you'd like to book for. Please make sure to add this in, to give us a clear idea of numbers.

Who is this for?

People of all ages are welcome to join! This event is primarily for people who identify as Jewish, although non-Jewish partners, family and close friends are very welcome to join in! People of all denominations and Jewish backgrounds are welcome, regardless of synagogue membership.

What are we eating?

The meal will be vegetarian and dairy-free, with gluten-free elements. There will be challah, which contains gluten and eggs. We will also have a variety of gluten-free and dairy-free salads. Please be in touch after registration to notify us of any allergies or dietary requirements, which we will do our best to acommodate.

Donations

This event is by donation. The recommended amount is ￡5 per person to cover the cost of the meal. The minimum set by the booking system is ￡1. If you're not able to donate or to use the online booking system, please contact sydney@scojec.org to register for no cost. We aim for sustainability by using reusable dishes and preparing the right amount of food, so we need to know who's coming. The exact location will only be sent to registered participants.

Accessibility

This event will take place outdoors in a local woodland - exact location will be sent to registered participants. The ground is relatively flat and even, but off of a main pathway, so unpaved. It is a 3-minute walk from the parking area to the meeting spot. The location is a 10-minute walk from the closest bus stop, and a 15-minute walk from the closest train station (Whitecraigs). There is a public toilet a 5-minute walk away which should be open until 9:30 pm. Seating will be on the ground, although you're also welcome to stand or sit on a log. We will have foam mats to sit on, or you're welcome to bring your own picnic blanket or lawn chair. We will have some cover available from trees and tarpaulines in case of rain.

Jewish Observance

All food served will be Kosher pareve or dairy, using only certified ingredients, cooked and served on kosher dishes, but cooked communally without Rabbinic supervision. We will be observing Shabbat and not cooking or doing melachot on Shabbat itself. The service will be informal and musical, with singing led by everyone, and seating together around the campfire.
