Workshop Focus

Since the advent of the first hyperspectral and RGB space based sensors, the ability to refine and extract information from satellite Earth Observation (EO) has grown dramatically with new generations of satellites and sensors offering a growing and increasingly detailed understanding of our world.  That is true of the land masses, but not of the oceans where most of the processes taking place are wide area and macro in nature.  Technology is emerging that would allow a better understanding of the world’s water masses using EO, but the requirement for the data and the forms that it might take are not well understood.  To date there has been little systematic analysis of the potential market for space based observation of the world’s oceans so it is difficult for developers to know what to collect, in what forms and how that information might assist with decision making and problem solving in the market place. There is a requirement for authoritative market research to assist UK companies in increasing their client base and product range to take full advantage of market opportunities.

Goals of the Workshop

This workshop is aimed at identifying potential markets for spaced based ocean observation data across a broad section of operators in the marine environment.  It is anticipated that by engaging with industries involved in the marine environment that some common themes may emerge for multiple use of particular data sets and types that can inform the developers and focus development into technologies and data that is market led.  It is an aim to identify those areas where market research should be targeted in order to inform UK EO companies of the potential market and areas for development.

Identification of data types and formats that are required

Identification of common themes and market areas

Prioritisation of needs based on those data sources identified

Coarse assessment of the value of satisfying the needs identified (high/low/medium)

Proposed structure for a thorough market research exercise

Outline Agenda

·         Welcome to the Satellite Applications Catapult

·         Discussion of current technologies and capabilities/limitations of space based systems

·         Creation of wish list of outputs from EO systems (group work)

·         Discussion on Immediacy and Prioritisation of needs (group work)

·         Formulation of a market research plan based on outcomes from previous sessions

Specific presentations on….

An introduction to Market Research – Sarah Madeley

Ballast Water Convention and EO – David Smith - Plymouth Marine Laboratories

        Marine Conservation and Satellite data

·         Capabilities of EO in the Marine Environment – John Hedley – ARGANS

Facilitated group work and a round-table discussion will prioritize key themes to progress within Catapult programmes and/or projects and identify key contributors and participants in a targeted market research programme.
