On this night, we pay tribute to the founding fathers of the Somali Studies Dr. Hussein Adam 'Tanzania' and Said Sheikh Samatar. Kayd is proud to bring together some of the leading academics in the field of Somali studies who will speak and reflect on the works of these two luminaries. The panelists include Prof. Ahmed Samatar, Founding Dean of the Institute for Global Citizenship, Macalester College, Minnesota, USA who worked closely with Dr.Tanzania and Prof. Abdi Samatar, Professor of Geography at the University of Minnesota, and author of many books including the recently published Africa's First Democrats. This event will be chaired by Dr. Idil Osman, Senior Teaching Fellow in SOAS, University of London and author of newly published book Media, Diaspora and the Somali Conflict. They are joined by Dr. Laura Hammond, senior lecturer at SOAS, the University of London who has been collecting research on conflict and food security, migration, and Diaspora in and from the Horn of Africa since the early 1990s.

On the second part of the evening, we will follow up with the presentation of Africa's First Democrats, Prof. Abdi Samatar's newest book. After Prof. Samatar's presentation, Dr. Laura Hammond and Prof. Ahmed Samatar will also will delve in and discuss the themes of the book and its relevance to Somali leadership both in the past and the future.
