Description

‘Some Call This Place Home’: Using place, location, and imagery in poetry

On Thursday 16th March 2017, radical bookshop Housmans launched its first Poet-in-Residence programme, in partnership with writer, poet and feminist activist Siana Bangura. Housmans is dedicated to the idea of poetry as an instrument for political change in uncertain times and so, through a programme of events and workshops curated by Siana and open to all, we will be introducing readers to new, unfamiliar voices and celebrating how langauge can be used as a form of resistance, creativity as a form of activism, and poetic verse as a method through which to explore questions of identity and belonging.

On Sunday 24th September join us for an afternoon of exploring the effects of use of place, location, and imagery in poetry. From physical location to figurative, how do these layers impact our sense of identity and how have poets used them to impact and connect with their audience? What are the links between the written and spoken word and the visual? How do all these techniques engage our senses? How do place, location, and imagery help us forge, dissect, and unravel our identities and inform our understandings of the concept of 'home'?

There will be writing time towards the end of the workshop to allow attendees to begin exploring ways they can employ place, location, and imagery to create powerful work exploring the concept of 'home' and notions of belonging.

Please bring pens, papers, notebooks or tablets – whatever you’d like to write on.

Spaces are limited to 10 attendees only.

** This workshop is part of a series of events and workshops curated by writer, poet, and activist Siana Bangura in partnership with Housmans Radical book shop and in assocation with Haus of Liberated Reading **
