Some stories from Threads of Empire:

A History of the World in Twelve Carpets

A talk by Dorothy Armstrong

On the saddles of warlords, draping the walls of palaces, under the feet of presidents, dictators and religious leaders: where there is power there have been carpets. Dorothy Armstrong’s recent book looks at global history through the lens of rugs - some accomplished and even revered, some humble, most made by voiceless weavers. In this talk, she will tell some of the stories from her book.

Dorothy Armstrong is a historian of the material culture of Asia. She has taught at the Royal College of Art, the Edinburgh College of Art and the University of Oxford. She was Beattie Fellow in Carpet Studies at the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, where she is now honorary research fellow.
