In 2012, my dad was a fit and active 46-year-old, running his own healthcare business and raising two daughters. A snowboarding accident left him with a serious neck injury and he was unable to work, with debilitating pain. What followed that week saw him with his GP for painkillers and a few unexplained chest pains one minute, and the next, being blue lighted to A&E with a suspected heart attack.

During a very long week in hospital, full of scans and procedures, he was discharged with a diagnosis: hypertrophic cardiomyopathy - a genetic condition that causes the heart muscle to thicken and can lead to sudden cardiac death, even in young and seemingly healthy people.

He was sent home with a bag full of medication and strict instructions not to even run up the stairs. He had no idea whether this meant he’d ever be able to work full-time again, support his family and continue to play squash, ski or cycle.

Thankfully, he found an incredible consultant who helped him understand the condition and live a carefully active life. Over a decade later, he’s still here, managing the condition with strength, humour, and his usual stubbornness. But it’s never been easy.

Cardiomyopathy is still under-recognised and often misunderstood. Many people have no idea they carry the gene until something serious happens. In our family, we’re very lucky to have received genetic testing, through which we’ve learnt my sister does carry the gene and I don’t.

I feel very lucky to be fit and healthy and that’s why, as a proud non-runner, I’ve signed up to run the 2025 London Marathon for Cardiomyopathy UK. My fundraising target is £2,500, which will go towards raising awareness, prevention, diagnosis and treatment, and will make a massive difference to the 1 in 250 people who are affected by this disease.
