Programme:

Manuel da Falla: 7 Canciones populares españolas

Jón Nordal: Pictures on a Panel Wall

Astor Piazzolla: Le Grand Tango

-

Alberto Ginastera: Pampeana No. 2

Jean Sibelius: Four Pieces, Op. 78

Edvard Grieg: Sonata for Cello and Piano in A Minor, Op. 36

This programme artfully interweaves musical offerings from Scandinavia, Spain and Argentina. The icy quality of the north is brought forth in Icelandic composer Jón Nordal’s stunning miniatures for cello and piano, in Edvard Grieg’s turbulent and impassioned cello sonata, and in Jean Sibelius’ intimate lyrical pieces. The fire is always bubbling beneath this glacial surface however, and bursts forth the zesty Grand Tango of Astor Piazzolla, Manuel da Falla’s seven popular folk songs, and in Alberto Ginastera’s thrilling Pampeana No.2, which evokes the lives of the gaucho cowboys of the Argentinian plains.
