Event description
Completely immerse yourself for a day in all things songwriting. A Company of Song workshop - facilitated by Dan Whitehouse

About this Event

Completely immerse yourself in your songwriting for a day and write several songs (or song sketches). This workshop is led by Dan Whitehouse

"... a master craftsman and wordsmith at the peak of his prowess." Mike Davies, FRUK

Working by ear, and improvisation, not music theory based, the immersion method uses simple musical games and exercises to re-connect writers with their inner-child creative self. This helps unlock blocks and provides stimulus and motivation to generate new and original raw material.

The workshop will start with an introductory session, demo and Q&A with Dan Whitehouse. You will have a chance to introduce yourself and Dan will set you up for your writing experience.

We regroup for a sharing session.

"All the ideas were refreshing, and just giving myself the time to devote to writing is pretty rare, even in lockdown."

“Thank you for helping me get out of my skin.”

“This was like trying to notate feelings, rather than theory”

“I found it useful to let go of perfect chord progressions and focus on the bit that’s inspiring - writing songs"

Timings

10:30 am to 12:00 Introduction, Q&A and demo with Dan Whitehouse

12:00 to 16:30 pm total immersion writing time

16:30 to 18:00 group sharing and feedback with Dan

Attending this workshop will allow you access to a private Facebook group where you can continue to share songs and experience with each other

Dan says: "You will have a rough time if you go into this process thinking of it as some kind of test that will reveal how good or bad a songwriter you are, or if you treat the situation like a school assignment, in which work will be assessed by some overseeing authority. This workshop is a game!"

When it is time to start a song, be playful, exploration and random. Simply take a breath and start somewhere – anywhere….no matter what kind of songs you want to write, understand that it really doesn’t matter where you start. A song that began being about your pencil in your hand may end being about your dead end job.

In advance of the workshop we will send you instructions for how to prepare for the day, which will include preparing your writing space, and making sure you have food and drink at the ready for the whole day. Don’t take phone calls or check mail Isolation – tell your friends and family your plans and ask them not to disturb (unless you want to collaborate with them).

This exercise is based on the book: The Frustrated Songwriter’s Handbook By Karl Coryat and Nicholas Dobson

Dan Whitehouse

A talented songwriter and storyteller, Dan Whitehouse was born in Wolverhampton and has spent a lifetime in Britain’s industrial heartland with a brief detour along the hippie trail when his parents decided to board the magic bus to Katmandu and San Francisco in the 1970s, and then to London as an eighteen year old, his prodigious talent making him a sought after guitarist.

For Dan the songwriting is key – his observational lyrics and imagined stories are soundtracked by an original take on modern folk /Americana – 'Black Country Soul'.

Political stories of displacement and refuge and lyrics dealing with anxiety and mental health, sit beside more personal reflections and universal themes of family and love, loss and compassion.

This year Dan released a double album - Dreamland Tomorrow

"Deliberately experimental, nothing short of beautiful" RnR magazine

"Urgent, pulsing with creativity and striking out into the unknown." Liverpool Sound & Vision

"A golden nugget, his best work yet" Music Republic Magazine
