About this event

Sonic Tide Event

Sonic Tide

Sonic Tide is an immersive sound installation and speculative ritual that invites you to encounter the River Thames as a shifting voice. Installed within the echoing chambers of Crossness Pumping Station, the work follows the movement of the tide, from the breath of marshland and wind at low tide to the heavy rhythms of infrastructure at high. As the day moves, the soundscape changes, so no two moments will sound the same.

Throughout the day, visitors are welcome to explore the space at their own pace. Additionally, visitors are invited to draw an oracle card offering simple prompts and questions designed to guide attention and reflection. This is not just an invitation to hear the river, but to consider how it might speak, and how you might respond.

Two public rituals take place during the day, each marking a turn in the tide. These short gatherings invite stillness, observation, and gentle movement, creating space for a shared listening experience:

  • 10:30 – Low Tide Ritual
  • 14:30 – High Tide Ritual

These are free to join, but please note that space is limited.

Sonic Tide asks you to listen, to drift, and to reimagine Crossness not only as a monument to Victorian engineering, but as a resonant chamber for the river’s voice, revealing new voices beneath its iron and stone.

Presented as part of Totally Thames 2025 at the Crossness Pumping Station.
