Artist Ashley Holmes will lead this walk centred on sounds and listening with the landscape

About this event

Gleadless Valley, situated 2 miles south-east of the city centre is tucked away between residential estates and neighbourhoods. Within the valley there are 7 heritage woodlands dating back to the 16th century, with an interconnected system of woodland and walking paths that allow you to get lost in the landscape, and lead you to a series of grasslands and meadows that are relatively hidden.

Artist Ashley Holmes will be leading a guided walk around the Gleadless Valley, encouraging participants to listen with the landscape and make sound recordings situated within the mix of environments. Through this wayfaring, a mix of questions will be posed, such as how can we experience the local environment and world around us with as little intervention as possible? and how can listening be a space of political encounter?

From the Gleadless Valley we will move to Arts Catalyst’s new base in Sheffield city centre, Soft Ground, where there will be space to listen collectively to the sound recordings just made.

This workshop is connected to Arts Catalyst’s Emergent Ecologies programme that explores how our experiences of place — from wetlands and waterways to city centre streets — and of ourselves within them, are shaped with and by other beings.

Meet Point - Is the pedestrian entrance at the top of Lees Hall Avenue (the entrance is signposted. Heeley & Meersbrook Allotments are just to the left. We will be walking around Hang Bank Wood, Carr Wood and Coney Green Wood.

Halfway through the workshop we will move to Arts Catalyst's new space, Soft Ground at 37 - 41 The Moor, in Sheffield city centre. Taxi's can be provided should you need one. If you are coming by car, please park with consideration on the surrounding streets near the meet point.

It is not suitable for wheelchair users or those with mobility issues. Soft Ground is on the first floor of a building on The Moor. Lift access and a disabled, all gender toilet is in place.
