Event description
A queer-feminist multimedia performance piece, a conceptual closet drama that stages imagined tête-a-têtes with Enlightenment thinkers.

About this Event

Emilia Galotti’s Colouring Book of Feelings is a queer-feminist multimedia performance piece, a conceptual closet drama that stages imagined tête-a-têtes with Enlightenment thinkers, writers, and pseudo-scientists using poetic text, dialogue, choreography, installation, recordings, and projections. Challenging the Enlightenment’s opposition of sentiment and rationality, the piece harnesses the experimental spirit of things that don’t quite work and are thus exactly right and fizzingly oblique, toying with our assumptions about seriousness, hospitality, domesticity, difficulty, form, and fun.

It's the third piece in My Little Enlightenment Plays, an ongoing project that bridges research, performance, lecture-performances, publication, installation, and collaboration. Previous pieces in the series and earlier versions been presented at Company Gallery (NYC), La MaMa Galleria (NYC), Parasol Unit, Cité Internationale des Arts (Paris), the Arnolfini, Bold Tendencies, and elsewhere.

Performed by Sophie Seita, Celine Lowenthal , Nisha Ramayya, Emma Attwood, Erin Robinsong and Jocelyn Spaar.

Costumes by Ciara Phillips and Kat Addis, projections by Simone Kearney, music by r. Karim, video by Lanny Jordan Jackson—all made in response to Seita’s text.

ART NIGHT

Emilia Galotti’s Colouring Book of Feelings was selected to be part of Art Night 2018 taking place on Saturday 7th July and will be presented at Bargehouse between 8pm-9pm.

Art Night is London’s largest free contemporary arts festival, transforming the city annually for one unforgettable night. Each year, Art Night invites a leading cultural institution to explore the history, culture and architecture of a different part of London, inspiring a series of new commissions, one off events and premieres by internationally renowned artists. Alongside this, Art Night works with local organisations, curators and artists, encouraging participation in the festival’s Art Night Open programme via an open call, that extends the festival further across the trail.

Art Night 2018 is curated by Ralph Rugoff and the Hayward Gallery, and coincides with the institution’s 50th Anniversary. For its third edition, Art Night moves south of the river, from Southbank Centre to Battersea Power Station through Vauxhall and Nine Elms on the 7th July. Art Night is supported by international auction house Phillips.

PLEASE NOTE The performance is being filmed. By participating you consent to your likeness being used in any video, photography or audio materials of the event and waive rights to the usage of these materials.
