Event description

Description

King’s College London Addictions Department and the pianist Christina McMaster are delighted to present Sound Mind, part of the Arts in Mind Initiative, and brokered and supported by the Cultural Institute at King’s. This collaborative arts and science research project is a programme of carefully selected works including Brahms, Rihm, Cage and Riley, performed by pianist Christina McMaster and friends. We invite you to lie back on a floor cushion and lose yourself in the music whilst watching psychedelic images projected above you. The concert will take place in the Chapel, Strand Campus, King’s College London at 7pm on the 31st October 2017.

A word or two of explanation: a proxy for the altered states of perception and awareness commonly described in the context of hallucinogenic drug experiences can be recreated using certain forms of music. Terry Riley for example has been lauded for creating a portal to ecstatic states, arrived at by different paths. These states can be encouraged and enhanced through immersive visual projections of psychedelic imagery. This is what we’ll be exploring with our concert, and we very much hope you’ll be able to join us.
