Sounds from Our Beautiful Island

Sounds from Our Beautiful Island is a joyful, music-led celebration of the voices, cultures and shared stories of Tower Hamlets. Presented by Grand Union Orchestra in collaboration with Oxford House, Young & Talented, Àkàndá Productions and Oitij-jo Kitchen, this special event brings together musicians and singers from across the world to honour the richness of our local communities.

Taking place on 18 December at Oxford House—coinciding with International Migrants Day—the performance offers a powerful counter-narrative to negativity around migration and multiculturalism, instead spotlighting unity, resilience and creativity.

Audiences will experience a vibrant mix of songs and musical traditions from across the globe, reflecting the many cultures that shape Tower Hamlets today. Expect music inspired by Bangladesh, South Africa, China, Nigeria, Jamaica, India, Latin America and more—all performed by Grand Union’s renowned global artists.

A key part of the project is its intergenerational collaboration. In the lead-up to the event, Grand Union’s musicians will work with young performers from Young & Talented, a local performing arts charity. Selected students will join the orchestra for the final performance, sharing the stage with seasoned Grand Union musicians—some of whom have been part of the orchestra for over 40 years. Together, they create a powerful musical dialogue across cultures and ages.

This is a relaxed performance, designed to be welcoming and accessible for all, including audiences with sensory sensitivities or additional needs. We offer affordable ticket tiers, step-free access, and clear travel information to support families, older residents, and anyone wishing to attend.

To add to the celebration, delicious food will be served by Oitij-jo Kitchen.
