Location: Town Centre, Andover, Hampshire

About the Workshop

What does soil sound like? How can we listen to the hidden life beneath our feet?

This interactive, sensory-based workshop invites participants of all ages to explore the living voice of the Earth through biosonification devices—tools that transform natural processes into sound. Whether you drop in or pre-book, you’ll take part in a unique blend of science, creativity, and reflection.

Engagement Activities

Hands-on sound exploration – Test and compare soils from different environments (woodland, garden, grassland, compacted paths, wet/dry samples).

Live listening – Hear the distinct sounds of each soil type and discuss what they reveal about ecosystems, health, and human impact (pollution, footfall, and more).

Big questions – What does a healthy ecosystem sound like? How does the Earth’s voice change under stress?

Reflection Activities

Soil graffiti – Choose a word that captures what you heard or felt—“buzz,” “hum,” “alive,” “empty”—and write it directly with soil on large white sheets, creating a bold, temporary wordscape.

Soil sculpture & mark-making – Shape soil into forms or patterns, building a striking visual and tactile connection between sound, language, and earth itself.

Organised by

A grassroots, volunteer-led environment organisation, whose core aim is to involve all young people in tree planting and caring for their world and to connect all people to the natural world through practical conservation and the arts.
