Event description
The Sounds-Write Years 3 to 6 course is coming to Perth, WA!

About this Event

Sounds-Write in years 3 to 6

Have you trained in Sounds-Write but wonder how to make the most of it in years 3 to 6? Are you wondering how Sounds-Write links up with current debates around teaching vocabulary and a knowledge curriculum?

The Sounds-Write Years 3-6 course is coming to Victoria on Friday 6th March 2020

This one-day professional development course is designed for teachers and other educational practitioners who have already trained in Sounds-Write and want to hone their skills and knowledge in teaching Sounds-Write in years 3 to 6.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this course, you will be able to:

• understand why it is essential to teach polysyllabic words throughout years 3-6, and how this provides the key to being able to access vocabulary at all stages and in all areas of the curriculum, such as scientific words

• understand how the ‘curse of expertise’ impacts on the teaching of phonics in years 3-6 and how to overcome it (The ‘curse of expertise’ refers to the tendency of some experts to underestimate how difficult novices find learning the knowledge and skills pertinent to a specific domain. The idea that something seems obvious to the expert is very often far from obvious to those new to a domain.)

• understand the basis of research evidence behind the approach

• understand what a vocabulary scope and sequence that goes from simple to complex means in the context of using Sounds-Write

• understand the structure of polysyllabic words

• understand the importance of teaching the lessons (L11, 12, 13, 14 and 15) with fidelity and of using precise language and approaches to error correction

• understand the difference between teaching the meaning of prefixes and suffixes and effective ways of teaching students how to read and write them in polysyllabic words: morphology vs syllabification

• deal with differentiation in this context

• understand how sentences are the building blocks of writing (as per The Writing Revolution), but how words are the foundation, and use word and sentence-level activities in the Wordbook.

We strongly recommend that you only attend the course if you have been teaching Sounds-Write for at least 1 year in years 3-6, or have considerable experience of teaching in the lower years and are now moving to years 3-6.

Please note the course is not open to those that have not completed the 4-day Sounds-Write course.
