South African Remedy Training Workshop - Limpopo - Polokwane - 26 March 2019

You are hereby invited to a Training Workshop on Response and Remedy for victims of forced labour, bonded labour, human trafficking and other forms of abuse in the Agricultural Sector

Human trafficking is a serious issue in our country. Stronger Together is a business-led Multi-Stakeholder collaborative initiative which have been working in the UK since 2011, in association with the UK’s 9 major supermarkets, to support businesses to reduce the risk of modern slavery within their business and supply chains.

In partnership with the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trade Association (WIETA) and in close alliance with the Sustainability Initiative South Africa (SIZA), Stronger Together have launched a new specialised industry programme to inform and equip South African wine and fruit agri-businesses to address labour exploitation in their businesses. We have had in excess of 50 training workshops with producers, senior manager and even labour providers and have gained very good insight into the various components for labour trafficking, especially in the farming sector. As part of the programme, Stronger Together has joined the National Freedom Network and formed further partnerships with A21 which operates the South African National Human Trafficking Resource Line and with the Salvation Army, to collectively ensure a ready response for Agri-victims of Modern slavery in the South African Context.

In order to ensure that we can refer any potential victims of labour trafficking to a ready response per province, we plan to visit each of the 6 main Agri-provinces to have interactive workshops with the experts in the field.

Target audience of training: Provincial Human Trafficking Task Teams and Rapid Response Teams

Per province: NPA, DOJ, DOL, DSD (3 members per department max) / 5 members of NGOs and Civil Society, 1 member from SAPS, and 2 members from the HAWKS / 2 members from other organisations working with any forms of trafficking in the province

Objectives of the training:

1. Target audiences have increased understanding of risk of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking in the agricultural sector and in particular:
   1. What does this look like in the agricultural sector (and globally)
   2. Who are potential victims & their needs
   3. Target audiences have clear picture of their role in:
      1. Responding to potential victims of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking or other forms of exploitation in the agricultural sector
      2. Providing remedy to potential victims of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking or other forms of exploitation in the agricultural sector
      3. Coordinating these efforts with business
      4. Have agreement on who does what where, have this written down and share with other partners and businesses in the region/province

   1. Create provincial Response and Remedy Pathway overview
   2. Case studies: when a case comes through to A21 / Labour inspectorate / Agricultural extension worker / S2G training – work through cases together (use existing ones or see if there are more relevant local ones available)
   3. Next steps
      1. Formal approval of that Response and Remedy Pathway at provincial / national level
      2. Coordination mechanism moving forward
