Description

Please join us for an interactive workshop session on response and remedy for victims of forced labour, bonded labour, human trafficking and other forms of abuse in the South African Agricultural Sector.

Workshop overview:

Human trafficking is a serious issue in our country and one that needs a multi-sectorial response to effectively address it. This participatory session is designed to inform participants about the risks of forced and bonded labour specific to the agricultural sector in South Africa, as well as facilitate dialogue amongst key stakeholders on effective response to potential victims. The workshop will cover: an introduction to the Stronger Together programme; the global and national scale of modern slavery in business supply chains; international and national legislation on human trafficking; an overview of risks within the South African agricultural sector; and, dialogue on effective remedy response and developing guidance for businesses.

By the end of the workshop participants will:

  • Have an increased understanding of the risk of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking in the South African agricultural sector
  • Understand who are potential victims & what their needs are
  • Understand which stakeholders are involved, and their roles and responsibilities in responding to potential victims of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking or other forms of exploitation in the agricultural sector
  • Inputted and worked collaboratively with others in the session into the development of a provincial remedy pathway for potential victims of forced/bonded labour, human trafficking or other forms of exploitation in the agricultural sector which will inform guidance for businesses.

Who is Stronger Together:

Stronger Together is a business-led multi-stakeholder collaborative initiative which have been working in the UK since 2013, and in South Africa since 2017. Stronger Together South Africa is delivered in partnership with the Wine and Agricultural Ethical Trading Association (WIETA) and the Sustainability Initiative of South Africa (SIZA) and is supported by prominent industry leaders across the supply chain including global and national retailers and exporters and importers. The programme supports South African agri-businesses to address the risk of forced labour within their businesses and supply chains through practical guidance, training and tools as well as facilitates cross-supply chain dialogue. The UK Home Office Modern Slavery Innovation Fund funded the first two years of the programme and in 2019 awarded funding for another two years.

Working with partners, the Stronger Together programme also includes multi-stakeholder workshops and sessions to inform and facilitate dialogue on response to potential incidences of forced labour.

The workshop is aimed at:

Stakeholders working on responding to potential incidences of forced or bonded labour or human trafficking, and/or providing services to victims of those offences. Including provincial Human Trafficking Task Teams and Rapid Response Teams. These include: government departments, members of NGOs and Civil Society, SAPS, the HAWKS and members from other organisations working with any forms of trafficking in the province.
