Between 6:30pm and 7:00pm, just before the main feature FILM, we’ll be showcasing short films by talented emerging filmmakers.
Tanu Weds Manu (2011), directed by Aanand L. Rai, is a romantic comedy that blends heart, humour, and cultural tension in a story of love that refuses to follow the rules.
Manoj “Manu” Sharma, a shy and well-educated doctor living in London, returns to India to meet a potential bride chosen by his family. He finds himself instantly smitten with the vibrant, rebellious Tanuja “Tanu” Trivedi — a fiercely independent woman who drinks, smokes, and has no interest in arranged marriage. Unbeknownst to Manu, Tanu is already in love with someone else and has no intention of marrying him.
As events unfold and misunderstandings accumulate, Manu’s quiet determination and genuine affection begin to unsettle Tanu’s world. Set against the colourful backdrop of small-town North India, the film explores the push and pull between tradition and personal freedom, family expectations and self-discovery.
With lively performances by R. Madhavan and Kangana Ranaut, and a memorable supporting cast, Tanu Weds Manu became a sleeper hit for its sharp dialogue, quirky characters, and a fresh take on modern Indian romance. It also laid the groundwork for the even more daring sequel, Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015).
