South Central Conference: Safety in Emergency Surgical Practice

Location: Grand Harbour Hotel, Southampton

In partnership with the Wessex Patient Safety Collaborative [part of Wessex Academic Health Science Network]

This free* one day conference is aimed at all surgeons and open to anaesthetists / nurses / ODPs / AHPs / QI staff and other interested hospital clinicians and staff.

Sessions to include; Foundations of surgical safety in emergencies and Learning for a safer service.

Delegates will have the opportunity to attend three workshops.

Planned workshops include:

  • Introduction of a Surgical Quality Assurance Meeting
  • Laparoscopic emergency surgery - reduced hospital stay and improved patient outcomes
  • Using Structured Mortality Reviews to learn from surgical deaths
  • Surgical Care Practitioners

Poster competition

Abstracts are invited on the theme of the ‘Safety in emergency surgical practice’.

The competition is open to all professional groups.

To enter please submit a 250 word abstract on Safety in emergency surgical practice by 4pm on Friday 4 August 2017 to rcsevents@rcseng.ac.uk

Successful candidates will be contacted by Friday 18 August to be invited to display their poster at the conference.

The prize

1st, 2nd and 3rd place will be awarded with a prize and certificates which will be presented at the conference.

Keynote Address

Dr Jane Carthy is a dynamic human factors consultant with technical expertise gained from both research and consultancy roles in healthcare, and other industries. She is passionate about applying human factors science to improve safety, quality, efficiency and experience.

RCS President elect

Professor Derek Alderson, RCS President elect will present his future plans for the RCS including discussing the role of the college in surgical training and the profession, updates on the RCS strategy and project Transform.

President of the Association for Perioperative Practitioners

Adrian Jones President of the AfPP will be delivering a break-out session titled, The extended surgical trauma team: fact or fiction? With the advent of trauma units and advanced trauma interventions, the Surgical Care Practitioner offer a flexible solution to clinical directors adapting surgical provision, whilst ensuring training opportunities for surgical trainees at junior CT1/2 and senior ST3 – ST 8 level. This presentation will discuss how the Orthopaedic department of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital has introduced innovative models of inpatient trauma care.

*This conference is free however a £50 refundable deposit is required to secure your place. This will be refunded upon attendance at the event.
