Event description
A celebration of Cornish Mining History to mark the 80th anniversary of the successful South Crofty Miners' strike of 1939.

About this Event

In the New Year of 1939 South Crofty miners went on strike to have their union and their concerns about pay and conditions listened to. Miners from all over Penwith joined the struggle and the dispute continued until the growing fears of war led to a successful conclusion in August of 1939. Health, safety, welfare and pay and conditions of miners were now negotiable!

South Crofty '39 hopes to celebrate not only this victory but the victory over Cornwall's mineral deposits hard earned by our miners over the hundreds and hundreds of years that the Cornish have been hard rock mining. Our mining history can be dated back to before the time of the pharaohs and today celebrates the pivotal role Cornwall's miners and the technology that Cornish inventors brought had on the Industrial Revolution.

Videos, speakers and presentations on Cornish Mining History and stories from those who lived through the strike months help to tell the tale, and Cornish music, singing and dialect stories will entertain you while you are here. The Puffing Devil, Trevithick's ground breaking invention, will add a little colour and smell to the proceedings as it puffs up and down, and don't worry about the children (big and little) being bored as we have all sorts of stuff going on for them including bouncy castles (of the traditional and assault course kind), archery and a NERF battlefield for them to tackle!

The entire day is FREE, that's FREE - yes, even the parking! There is literally something for everyone, young and old, to do and what a great last weekend for all the family before the children go back to school. CTUC (Cornwall Trades Union Council) has booked the entire Heartlands site for the whole day so ALL of the facilities including the gardens and the museum are free to all who decide to come and enjoy South Crofty '39.

While you are here check out what Cornish unions are doing for your pay, conditions and health and safety by visiting the many stalls in the foyer of the Chi an Bobel Great Hall, and maybe what you can do in your workplace to help others.

The first 50 who present an Eventbrite ticket on the day even receive a free goody bag! (Just take your Eventbrite ticket to the main CTUC stall in the foyer of the main Chi an Bobel Great Hall to receive your goody bag)

Details and a timetable for the day will be posted on social media and Eventbrite as they become available so check back here, CTUC on Facebook (search for Cornwall Trades Council), or Twitter (@TradesCornwall), you can also email us at southcrofty39@gmail.com and we'll see you there!
