Event description

Description

Are you aged 16-25 and want to make a difference for nature and the environment?

Help us to tell the story of Truleigh Hill through film, photo and social media platforms by discovering its history, geology and wildlife.

We will be providing minibus transport from Shoreham up to Truleigh Hill at 10:30am. It is also possible to access Truleigh Hill on foot or cycling along the South Downs Way, or by car to the Youth Hostel car park.

The rolling chalk hills of the South Downs were laid down over 100 million years ago and have been shaped by the activities of people for over 500,000 years.

But the South Downs National Park as one special place, encompassing those iconic chalk hills, lowland heath, ancient forest, river valleys and the Sussex heritage Coast, has only existed since 2010.

The landscape seen today has been moulded, created and cared for by the people who have farmed, worked here and called it home for centuries. Of all the National Parks in the UK, ours boasts the closest relationship between people and land as shown by the many writers, artists and musicians inspired by its special beauty.

Truleigh Hill is also a location where you will find a bounty for wildlife species, from Kestrels and Owls to rare Orchids and an abundance of Butterflies, Bat species, Glow worms and Great Crested Newts.

Truleigh Hill is one of the highest points on the South Downs (216m). In World War II it was used for radar defences by the RAF, today, 4 tall telecommunications towers sit on the same site as the radar station. It is also where people, landscape & wildlife meet together. Cyclists, trail runners and hikers regularly pass through Truleigh Hill heading in both directions and a new landscape project will safeguyard this special part of the South Downs for future generations.

What you'll need: Smartphone or camera but we have stuff to play around with too!

Also a packed lunch or snack, drinking water, plus a passion for the environment!

What to wear: Sturdy outdoor footwear suitable for being out in the countryside on uneven paths and clothing suitable for the conditions like waterproof coat or sun hat/glasses. It gets windy up on Truleigh Hill so keep an eye on your weather app!

Where to meet: Truleigh Hill Youth Hostel or Shoreham minibus collection at the Shoreham Centre (2 Pond Road, Shoreham-by-Sea, West Sussex, BN43 5WU). Click here for a Google maps link.

Cost: it's free, this is volunteering!

Expenses: we can reimburse reasonable travel expenses (i.e. no long-haul flights!)
