Youth Action: Shortheath Common Nature Recovery
A chance to Join Heathland Ranger, Kirsty, for nature conservation and wildlife habitat restoration around Shortheath Common.
Help with clearing paths around the heathland to improve access for the public and enhance the enjoyment of this special site. You will be using a variety of hand tools, no previous experience necessary as you will be shown how to use the equipment. While we’re on site there will be a chance to learn more about the habitat and the fascinating and rare species that live here.
Shortheath Common is a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), giving it legal protection under the Wildlife & Countryside Act. The common has areas of bracken, woodland, heath and a pond, but its main ecological interest is a large valley mire.
It is a Special Area of Conservation due to its impressive ‘floating’ transition mire, which serves to encourage a more diverse range of flora and fauna than the other heathland sites. The invertebrates are also of particular interest, including 23 breeding species of dragonfly.
Rare ground-nesting birds such as woodlark and nightjar nest here. These birds migrate from as far away as South Africa to breed on our heathlands between March and the end of July each year.
