Description

This is a social event organised by and for Berkshire CAMRA members but we welcome all CAMRA members and their guests; please feel free to join us.

An exploration of South London craft brewery taprooms meeting at Elephant & Castle Underground (shopping centre entrance) then going on foot, by bus, and by train. Visiting Orbit, Clarkshaws, Brixton, London Beer Lab, Canopy and Bullfinch. Others along the route: The Florence Brewpub; and, if time permits, Brick and Brockley. Full details with map and background story at:

https://fueledbybeer.wordpress.com/2017/06/01/se-london-brewery-trails/

Important update: starting at 2:00 pm GWR services from Paddington will terminate at Maidenhead. Replacement buses will continue to Theale and Didcot via Reading. Rail service to Newbury and Bedwyn will resume at Theale. This is due to weekend electrification work. There will be normal service to Reading on the Waterloo line.

How much walking is involved?

  • Be prepared to walk at least 2.8 miles in three segments between Elephant & Castle, Brixton and Herne Hill (0.8/1.1/0.9 miles).
  • The third walking segment, Brixton to Herne Hill, can be eliminated with a 2 minute, 1-stop train ride but depending on timing it may be quicker to walk.
  • For those who decide to continue beyond Herne Hill to Peckham (time permitting) add another 1.2 miles in two segments (0.5/0.7 miles) making a total walk of 4.0 miles.
  • If we make it all the way to Brockley then the total walk would be 4.8 miles.
  • Each walking segment is connected using a bus or train ride - be sure to have a Travelcard or Oyster.
  • Full details, including a map, are in my blog post.

What are the brewery taprooms like?

  • Anyone who has walked the Bermondsey Beer Mile will be famililiar with craft breweries operating out of a railway arch. Almost all of the breweries on this trail are of this type.

What kind of beer can I expect?

  • As with Bermondsey, this brewery trail features predominantly 'craft keg' styles. There will be some British real ale by KeyKeg dispense and some Continental saisons, lagers and sours for example;
  • Clarkshaws should have at least one cask ale on and if we make it beyond Herne Hill, so too should Brick and Brockley.

What about food?

  • As with Bermondsey, the taprooms are not geared up to offer much if anything in the way of food. There are, however, numerous options along the route;
  • At the beginning of the walk, numerous fast food options are available along Walworth Road;
  • Through Brixton, there are numerous street food options and ethic shops;
  • At Herne Hill, The Florence pub offers food all day, and the onsite brewery should be back in production;
  • In Peckham, Slow Richie's serves up street food at the Brick taproom.

Can I join/leave the trail at some point along the way?

  • Yes, logical places would be at Loughborough Junction, Brixton, Herne Hill or Peckham Rye stations (national rail);
  • Follow our progress on Twitter; we'll be using hashtag #SLBT17.
