Proctor and Matthews Architects with Peabody and Turkington Martin

Peabody’s regeneration of South Thamesmead is an ambitious long-term project that focuses on the integration of existing communities and acknowledges the importance of creating not only physical connections with the existing urban context but also metaphorical links to the local history, culture and people.

John Lewis, Executive Director of Thamesmead, will introduce Peabody’s vision for the transformation of the wider area – which when completed in the 1970s, was hailed as a ‘town of the future’ by the Greater London Council - as well as describing the significant involvement the residents of the existing estate have had on the proposed new development. Drawing on the wider area’s captivating history, Proctor and Matthews Architects will reveal the narrative behind their approach to developing a mixed-use masterplan creating a ‘liveable neighbourhood’ with a distinctive character and identity for 1,600 new dwellings. Focusing on creating a new neighbourhood centre, the plan’s first phase, Southmere, will deliver over 525 mixed-tenure homes and exemplifies London’s vision for ‘good growth’, providing the framework for a sustainable community.

Landscape Architects Turkington Martin will explain their evocative proposals for the public realm - rain gardens, water channels, canals and ephemeral pools help to connect Southmere Lake with Abbey Wood Station. The design theme of ‘water,’ is used to celebrate and enhance the area’s pre-existing relationship with the Thames, nearby lakes and canals.
