Description

In recent years, the end of life care needs of people with learning disabilities has been recognised as a public health imperative. However, there remains an evidence gap concerning the types of deaths people with learning disabilities face and how their last months of life are supported.

This event will report on a major study of the last months of life of people with learning disabilities living in LD services in the UK.

In all data were obtained on 222 deaths of people with learning disabilities. They had been supported by one of 37 participating services, services that supported more than 12, 000 people with learning disabilities. Every region of the UK had a service that was managed by these 37 providers.

During the data the need for such a study and the findings from it will be discussed. This will be followed by a series of discussion group sessions that will focus on:

(i) Issues in making LD services ‘death and dying’ ready

(ii) The timely recognition of dying in a person with LD

(iii) Involving people with LD in decision making at the end of life

(iv) Supporting a person with LD to die in an appropriate setting
