South West Fed Autumn Forum: Interpretation in the Historic Environment

Discover best practice for delivering excellent interpretation no matter what the budget, understand the steps needed to deliver an interpretation project from concept through to design and final product, and how to embed story telling as part of your organisational ethos.

3 October 2019 10.00 – 16.15, Gloucester Cathedral

About the event

This event, which is free for South West Fed members, will provide a unique opportunity to gain advice, ideas and practical guidance for delivering interpretation-based projects. Non-members can also attend for £30 (it may be cheaper to become a member - click here for more information).

Interpretation helps visitors to make sense of, and connect with a collection, site or event by creating engaging experiences. Good story-telling is always at the heart of our heritage, but the emergence of digital technology, higher visitor expectations and the need to meet the needs of wide-ranging audiences can make the world of interpretation a daunting prospect for any organisation.

This event will help anyone who is preparing or delivering an interpretation-based project, or who is interested in learning more about how different forms of interpretation can be used to inspire a variety of audiences. Through a range of talks and workshops, you will gain practical tips to be able to effectively tell the story of your collection or site. As usual, there will be opportunities to network and to learn in groups.

“Well delivered interpretation can have a profound impact on the experience of visitors by providing opportunities for them to understand and get excited about heritage – and isn’t that what the sector is all about? We are blessed to have such an amazing array of heritage assets in the south west, all of which have extraordinary stories to tell. This forum will help attendees to uncover how they can deliver excellent interpretation in their own contexts, and I'm really looking forward to seeing how people respond and apply what they learn in the south west.”

Theo Platt, Meetings Secretary, South West Fed
