Event description

Description

The University of Southampton's Department of Modern Languages warmly invites you to celebrate with us as we launch our new SoGerman Network.

We have a range of exciting cultural activities coming up in October to appeal to all tastes - including a Viennese Bake Off, acting workshops for youth and adults, waltzing lessons, German language tasters and much more!

While there are a number of events planned during our SoGerman Festival (see programme details on our website below), we do encourage you to sign up for the following events in our programme:

Simon Winder: 'The Many Faces of Germany'

Friday, 21 October at 18:30

We are used to seeing the German-speaking area of Europe as a large, sometimes threatening state - but for almost all of its history Germans have lived in fragmented, weak mini-semi-states. In this entertaining talk, Simon Winder will analyse the myriade, strange ways in which Germans have been ruled and the profound impact this has had on German culture.

Simon Winder is the author of The Man Who Saved Britain (2006), Germania (2010) and Danubia (2013). He has lived in London and has worked as a publisher at Penguin Books for twenty years.

Viennese Bake Off

Saturday, 22 October at 10:30

Bake your 'Austrian' or 'German' cake and bring it on Saturday morning to enter the competition! Details including recipes and video demonstrations will be available on our SoGerman webiste (below).

Brecht Fast! Theatre Workshop for Young and Old

Saturday, 22 October at 12:00 and 13:30

Spend a fun-packed session with theatre professionals from The Discarded Nut Theatre Company discovering more about Bertolt Brecht, the German playwright and poet, through the use of slapstick, physical theatre and games. What better way to learn than through laughter!

Brecht made and shaped theatre in a way that had a huge impact upon its development with many of his ideas being so revolutionary, that they changed the theatrical landscape forever. This giant of the theatrical world realised that comedy would be an excellent way of engaging the audience. It's 'silliness' in effect, but often makes strong social comment in the way it's used in the treatment of a serious subject.

Language Taster

Saturday, 22 October at 11:15 and 13:15

Get a taste of the German language in one of our Language Taster sessions! Offered twice in our programme, this 45-minute introductory language workshop is designed for absolute beginners.

'Bring your waltzing shoes' - Dance Workshop

Saturday, 22 October at 15:00

The Southampton University Ballroom and Latin Dance Society will be performing a Viennese Waltz; a dance that originated in Austria and Southern Germany but is now a classic part of ballroom dancing culture all over the world. The society will then be putting on a dance workshop, teaching you the basics of the Waltz that has been danced in ballrooms all over Europe for centuries. The session will conclude with a Latin demonstration, showing a different style of dance that the society offers.
