Description
Technical lecture - Fluid Structure Interaction in Marine Propulsion
Lecture details:
Fluid-structure interactions impact on ship performance and structural integrity in a number of ways. When it comes to propellers, the unsteady loading due to non-uniformity in the wake and vortex shedding give rise to vibrations which have adverse effects on radiated noise, passenger comfort and structural fatigue. Understanding the physical mechanisms involved is key to minimising these effects. This lecture will discuss developments in numerical simulations to predict these phenomena and how these might be used to improve the design and operation of ships and propellers.
Event speaker
Dr. Richard Pattenden, QinetiQ
Event speaker biography
Graduated in Ship Science at University of Southampton in 1998. Obtained a PhD in computational and experimental fluid dynamics applied to flows around bluff bodies from University of Southampton (2004). Post-doctoral research fellow at University of Southampton looking at vortex-induced vibrations of offshore structures. Worked at CD-adapco, the developers of STAR-CCM+ CFD software, for five years. Joined QinetiQ in 2010 as a CFD specialist. Now leads the hydrodynamics CFD team covering a wide range of CFD applications from resistance and propulsion to manoeuvring of a range of vessel types. Chair of the ITTC Resistance & Propulsion committee.
