About this event

Sowing Tears and Reaping Joy
An evening exploring the rich heritage of Renaissance laments with Brighton Consort

The Renaissance period is renowned for the discoveries, revivals, and explorations, from the humanistic pursuits of classical scholarship, medicine, and astronomy to the beauty of form and expression in painting, architecture – and, of course, music!

Join us for a concert that delves deeply into one of the most poignant and enduring artistic themes of the period: the expression of human emotion and spiritual reflection through art: the humble lamentation.

This evening’s programme invites you on a journey through the sorrows and joys that define the human experience. Taken from the Second Book of Samuel, King David's heart-wrenching cry "Absalom fili mi" (Absalom, my son) inspired many composers during the Renaissance seeking to explore the intersection of sacred narrative and human vulnerability through the powerful themes of paternal grief and divine sorrow.

The height of this emotion will direct and transition our focus from darkness to light, and renewed hope for the future. The second theme of this programme, joy, will be explored through a few different themes, including 'Surrexit pastor bonus' (the shephered has arisen) and 'Haec dies' (this is the day).

Whether you're a fan of early music or simply looking for a unique cultural activity, Sowing Tears and Reaping Joy promises to be an experience filled with beauty, emotion, and musical mastery.

Directed by internationally renowned Early Music specialist Greg Skidmore, the concert features works by both celebrated and lesser-known composers, including Weelkes, Byrd, Tomkins, and Lassus.

Don't miss this chance to fall in love with the music of the past!
