Synopsis

We will take a brief ‘stroll’ through the methodologies of the past and present and share some interesting experiences of projects and pitfalls in the UK, Europe and beyond, try to avoid a U-turn in the middle lane of a motorway in China and discover frequent references to the film ‘Lost in Translation’.

Based on this analysis of the strengths and weaknesses of the most common ‘ologies’ for software development, Observation Driven Development will be presented as an alternative.

Although the concepts are common to all development languages, the talk is mainly aimed at the Java development community. Parts of the talk are illustrated with code and screenshots from two leading software quality tools.

Biography

Mark Zaremba-Tymieniecki MBCS CITP has spent some 30 years writing, designing and maintaining software. He has extensive project management and development experience in a wide range of roles, applications and technologies, from developing the first on-line program for M & S for handling the distribution of chicken portions to advising the US National Imaging Agency on testing strategy in the multi-partner development of a satellite intelligence gathering system. In recent years Mark has focused on Code Quality based around Metrics and Observation Driven Development. He believes that the way forward and perhaps to bring development back on-shore hinges on the need to get it right before the the testing process even starts. This has seen Mark lecturing on code metrics in China, India, Europe and the USA while promoting AgitarOne, a leading software quality tool.
