Event description

Description

The first man in space is back on Earth and facing new temptations. Fame, fortune, alcohol, nostalgic space anthems and sex.

THE SHOW

Slipshod Theatre present their all new original musical in this exclusive preview performance in Winchester ahead of a two week run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Can this cosmic captain control his space junk? A psychedelic, daring trip into the world of overnight stardom. The Yuri Gagarin biographical musical delving into the mind of a charismatic but troubled hero. Featuring a foot-stomping blend of original songs and timeless space-themed classics with a live band. What does it take to make a Soviet man a worldwide legend?

'Nobody leaves without a smile on their face'(TheOutlierScotland.co.uk, 2017).

THE SETUP

In a world of Instagram influencers, YouTube celebrities and Talent Show megastars, anyone can have their five minutes of fame. But overnight stardom isn’t all just yacht parties, film premieres and selling tooth whitener on Twitter.

'Witty and Moving Original Comic Drama' (Daily Echo, 2016)

Yuri Gagarin was possibly the word’s first sudden celebrity – and it’s about time to tell his story of champagne soirées, sexy nurses, becoming besties with Fidel Castro and tumbling down the star-studded stairs of the dark side of fame.

He was the first man in space, originally from a small Russian peasant family. After training to become a pilot, he was selected to become the new face of the Soviet Union and travel among the stars. Coming back down to Earth however, he struggled with his newfound fame. Space Junk: A Soviet Musical takes a look at his journey from the moment he lands to travelling across the world, the relationship with his family, his eventual disillusion with his country and his mysterious death.

THE MUSIC

Against a backdrop of classic Bowie space anthems and an all new original interstellar backing track, Space Junk: A Soviet Musical brings to light how anyone - even an engineer from Smolensk Oblast – can bring themselves to the precipice of fame-fuelled self-destruction.

Featuring live performances of songs by David Bowie, Elton John, Frank Sinatra, Nat King Cole and more as well as an original score by composer Madeline Ashman.

THE CAST

Mike Dorey takes centre stage in a mind boggling, well-researched performance as Yuri Gagarin. Supported by an incredible ensemble cast including Liv Richardson-Frisby as his valiant wife Valentina Gagarina, Ali Cornforth as his young daughter Elena.

Alongside them is Jack Etheridge as legendary WW2 fighter pilot Eric 'Winkle' Brown, Aditi Mohan as Valentina Tereshkova - the first woman in space, Oscar Ginn as Alexey Leonov - the first man to complete a space walk and Jake Mace as the Cuban dictator Fidel Castro. Featuring Harry Smith as the one and only Vodka Man.

For the first time ever Slipshod performs with a LIVE four-piece band featuring Madeline Ashman, Harry Smith, Ed Cross and Tom Tollyfield.

It's an hour of foot-stomping, psychedelic, character-driven fun - with comedy, drama, dancing and a 6ft anthropomorphised vodka bottle. Come watch this exclusive one off preview show!
