Introduction to Space Mission Operations

Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd and Catena Space are proud to announce our third annual Space Mission Operations Course (SMOC), a practical course to provide participants with both a theoretical understanding of Space Mission Operations and hands on exercises.

The course will run from 16-20 October 2017 in beautiful Cornwall.


Course registration includes:

  • Full 4 day course around space mission operations, taught by industry professionals
  • Hands-on practicals for immersive learning

  • Welcome reception and dinner
  • Mid-week social activity
  • Tour of Goonhilly Earth Station
  • Transport between Falmouth and Goonhilly Earth Station
  • Printed version of course materials (optional, extra cost)

The course is hosted at Goonhilly Earth Station, a working ground station. Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the major functions of space operations systems (and requirements, constraints)
  • Appreciate the basics of orbital mechanics and how it drives operational concept design
  • Identify the main parts of a space missions communications network
  • Understand basic satellite communications principles and determine and analyse the key parameters of system design
  • Complete link budget calculations and assess trade-off issues with other aspects of mission design
  • Define key tasks to be performed by mission planners and operators through the mission lifetime
  • Appreciate the distinctive aspects of operations approaches in ground and space segment
  • Understand overall system architecture from a data flow point of view
  • Explain the main differences between conventional commercial satellite operations, and emerging low cost approaches
  • Understand how telemetry and telecommanding are performed in typical mission operations centres


This course is for you if

- you are a recent graduate or new post-graduate student wanting an understanding of the space sector

- you are an engineer transferring into the space sector

- you work in the space sector and need an understanding of space mission operations

The course is delivered by industry practitioners and academic staff with a breadth of experience within the sector.


Tickets & Logistics

Places are limited and early booking is advised. We suggest that participants stay in Falmouth for the duration of the course. We have arranged a discounted rate with a local hotel (details will be sent out by the end of July), but you are welcome to make your own arrangements if you prefer. We will provide transportation between Falmouth and Goonhilly Earth Station every day if required.

Please note that we cannot provide airport transfers or other arrival/departure transportation. However, if you wish to share a taxi with other participants and are happy for your contact details to be shared with others on the course we can faciliate arrival/departure car share. You can also easily reach Cornwall by train, and most hotels in Falmouth are located within walking distance of Falmouth Town, Docks, or Penmere train station.

Depending on the number of registered participants we reserve the right to cancel the course by 01 September 2017. We advise that you do not book your travel until you have received confirmation from us that we will run the course. This confirmation will be sent out shortly after the cut off date.

We have a small number of discounted student tickets available. If you are a student and would like to participate but are unable to obtain a student ticket, please email the organisers to discuss your participation.
