Introduction to Space Mission Operations with Foundation Day

Goonhilly Earth Station Ltd and Catena Space are proud to announce our third annual Space Mission Operations Course (SMOC), a practical course to provide participants with both a theoretical understanding of Space Mission Operations and hands on exercises.

The programme will be preceded by a SMOC Foundation Day on 19 March 2018 to bring you up to speed on the basic concepts underlying the course. The course will then run for three full days from 20-22 March 2018 in beautiful Cornwall (9 AM to 6 PM). The Foundation Day and SMOC can each be booked separately, or as a package.

Course registration for the SMOC Foundation Day includes:

  • 1 day course covering spacecraft basics, orbital mechanics and ground stations; taught by industry professionals
  • Digital version of course materials
  • Transport between Falmouth and Goonhilly Earth Station

Course registration for SMOC includes:

  • Full 3 day course around space mission operations, taught by industry professionals
  • Hands-on practicals for immersive learning
  • Digital version of course materials
  • Welcome reception and dinner (20 March)
  • Mid-week social activity
  • Tour of Goonhilly Earth Station
  • Transport between Falmouth and Goonhilly Earth Station

Both the SMOC Foundation Day and full course are hosted at Goonhilly Earth Station, a working ground station. Attendees will be able to:

  • Describe the major functions of space operations systems (and requirements, constraints)
  • Identify the main parts of a space missions communications network
  • Understand basic satellite communications principles and determine and analyse the key parameters of system design
  • Complete link budget calculations and assess trade-off issues with other aspects of mission design
  • Define key tasks to be performed by mission planners and operators through the mission lifetime
  • Appreciate the distinctive aspects of operations approaches in ground and space segment
  • Understand overall system architecture from a data flow point of view
  • Explain the main differences between conventional commercial satellite operations, and emerging low cost approaches
  • Understand how telemetry and telecommanding are performed in typical mission operations centres


This course is for you if

- you are a recent graduate or new post-graduate student wanting an understanding of the space sector

- you are an engineer transferring into the space sector

- you work in the space sector and need an understanding of space mission operations

The course is delivered by industry practitioners and academic staff with a breadth of experience within the sector.


Tickets & Logistics

Places are limited and early booking is advised. We suggest that participants stay in Falmouth for the duration of the course. We will provide transportation between Falmouth (St. Michael's Hotel) and Goonhilly Earth Station every day if required. We have been able to negotiate a corporate rate for rooms at St. Michael's Hotel & Spa in Falmouth (where we will hold the welcome dinner). As of 1st November 2017, this rate is £105 for a double room at single occupancy including B&B, but may change depending on room availability at the hotel. Please note if you wish to make a booking at St. Michael's Hotel when you register for the course, and we will be able to send you booking instructions. To secure the best rate we recommend early registration for the course and hotel booking.

You are of course welcome to make your own arrangements if you prefer. Some options include:

  • Merchant's Manor Hotel, Falmouth
  • Oasis Guest House, Falmouth
  • Poltair Guest House, Falmouth
  • Premier Inn, Helston
  • Tregaddra B&B, Helston area (about 5 minutes drive from Goonhilly Earth Station)

Please note that we cannot provide airport transfers or other arrival/departure transportation. However, if you wish to share a taxi with other participants and are happy for your contact details to be shared with others on the course we can faciliate arrival/departure car share. You can also easily reach Cornwall by train, and most hotels in Falmouth are located within walking distance of Falmouth Town, Docks, or Penmere train station.
