Space Park Conversations
Join us for a fascinating journey through more than 50 years of scientific discovery, adventure and exploration — from the depths of our oceans to the far reaches of space.
Dr Barry Giles, a leading scientist and author, has dedicated his career to uncovering the mysteries of distant planets, binary stars, neutron stars, stellar mass black holes and active galaxies. His work has taken him across the globe — collaborating with world-leading organisations including the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, the University of Tasmania, CSIRO and the Australian Antarctic Division.
In his talk, “A Piece of the Action – STEM++ adventures below, on, above and beyond planet Earth”, Barry will share career highlights and personal stories from his time as:
- An astrophysicist studying some of the most extreme environments in the universe
- A physical oceanographer embarking on international research voyages
- A glaciologist working in the icy wilderness of Antarctica
- A key contributor to NASA’s RXTE X-ray astronomy satellite mission
Barry began his scientific career at the University of Leicester, earning his BSc (Hons) in Astronomy & Physics (1973) and PhD in High-Energy Astrophysics (1978). His experiences span three continents — the UK, Australia and the USA — and his stories promise to inspire, educate and entertain.
Whether you’re passionate about astronomy, oceanography, polar science or just love a great adventure story, this is a Space Park Conversations event you won’t want to miss.
