Description

Join our Spanish Book Club once a month, where we discuss contemporary and classic books in Spanish, whilst enjoying delicious food and drink from the author's country of birth. The book for January is the thrilling novel, La Noche de los Peones by Spanish author Esteban Navarro.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

The participation fee includes a copy of the book, Spanish tapas & wine, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks, and all proceeds are going to the children's charities, Shaftesbury Young People and Asociación Fatima.

The maximum number of participants is 10, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

We have a relaxed atmosphere, with most of the discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying tapas and a glass of wine. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting!

Receive a copy of La Noche de los Peones when you purchase a ticket, so you can read it in advance. Buy before 20th December, to receive free delivery of the book. Tickets bought after this date will need to collect the book from Hotel Strand Continental, 143 Strand, WC2R 1JA.

ABOUT LA NOCHE DE LOS PEONES AND LEVEL OF SPANISH:

La Noche de Los Peones is a crime novel with a difference. With a deeply realistic plot thanks to the author's own experience, having been in the police-force for more than twenty years, the story is one of intrigue combined with reflection: about the contradictions that make us who we are and the immeasurable tide that forces us forward, day by day, as pawns is a chessboard

During the night shift at a police station in Huesca, Andrés learns of the death of an old friend whom he has not seen in twenty years, but who for some reason had gone to his city to tell him something. With the help of Diana, a young practicing officer, the veteran detective will undertake an investigation that will force him to travel to the past to find out what unites them after so long.

If you can understand around 80% of the below extract, we recommend you joining us for this session!:

El fax escupió, con una lentitud irritante, un único folio. La máquina, cachazuda, chasqueó estentórea varios sonidos estridentes que mortificaron el oído de Andrés Hernández. No soportaba, el veterano policía, el restallido intermindable de los engranajes del único aparato de fax que había en toda la comisaría provincial de Huesca. Pero la anticuada máquina resistía, inamovible e impávida, la embestida de la modernidad.

FUTURE EVENTS:

The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books of great quality.

¡Esperamos verte pronto!
