Event description

Description

Join our Spanish Book Club once a month, where we discuss contemporary and classic books in Spanish, whilst enjoying delicious food and drink from the author's country of birth. The book for June is the powerful bestseller, El beso de la Mujer Araña by Argentine author, Manuel Puig.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

The participation fee includes a copy of the book, Argentinian food & wine, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks, and all proceeds are going to the children's charities, Shaftesbury Young People and Asociación Fatima.

The maximum number of participants is 10, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

We have a relaxed atmosphere, with most of the discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying tapas and a glass of wine. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting!

Receive a copy of El beso de la Mujer Araña when you purchase a ticket, so you can read it in advance. Buy before 29th May, to receive free delivery of the book. Tickets bought after this date will need to collect the book from Hotel Strand Continental, 143 Strand, WC2R 1JA.

ABOUT "EL BESO DE LA MUJER ARANA" AND LEVEL OF SPANISH:

El beso de la Mujer Araña delves deep into the underbelly of crime in Argentina, depicting an ongoing dialogue between two cellmates who develop a friendship.

The story explores homosexuality in the 1970s, which was one of the most important decades for same-sex rights in Argentina due to a civil revolution in the nation. The value of a human being is at the crux of this novel and the characters speak in a beautiful dialogue with each other, expressing tough love. We are all worth the same, we have all made mistakes and we all deserve respect.

If you can understand around 80% of the below extract, we recommend you joining us for this session!:

Y prometeme otra cosa… que vas a hacer que te respeten, que no vas a permitir que nadie te trate mal, ni te explote. Porque nadie tiene derecho a explotar a nadie… Molina, prometeme que no te vas a dejar basurear por nadie.

FUTURE EVENTS:

The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books of great quality.

¡Esperamos verte pronto!
