About this event

Join our Spanish Book Club, where we discuss contemporary and classic books in Spanish, whilst enjoying food from the author's country of birth. The book for September is the critically acclaimed novel, "La Bajamar", by the celebrated Spanish author, Aroa Moreno Durán.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

The participation fee includes tapas, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks. The maximum number of participants is 8, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

We have a relaxed atmosphere, with discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying light Spanish snacks. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting!

The session does not include the book, and you can purchase a copy here.

ABOUT 'LA BAJAMAR' AND LEVEL OF SPANISH:

'La Bajamar' centres on three generations of women of the same family, with themes of female empowerment, secrets and war.

Adirane returns to her family home in the north of the Basque Country, with the fragile excuse of recording the last memory of her grandmother Ruth de Ella's childhood during the Civil War. She has left her husband and her five-year-old daughter behind, without explanation, to try to find a new starting point from her own past. Adriana, her mother, also lives in her house, with whom she has not spoken for years. In this novel, mothers and daughters from different generations will weave a genealogy shaken by family secrets and confrontations that until now have kept them apart.

Through a beautiful and evocative prose, the author, Aroa Moreno Durán leads us through almost a century of our recent history: the horror of war, the uprooting of exile, from the secrets of the past to the light of the future.

The book club is suitable for those who have at least an intermediate level of Spanish.

FUTURE EVENTS:

The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books by great authors. ¡Esperamos verte pronto!
