About this Event

The book for March is the critically acclaimed novel, "La muerte de Artemio Cruz", by the celebrated Mexican author, Carlos Fuentes.

WHAT'S INCLUDED:

The participation fee includes a copy of the book, tapas, and a session co-ordinated by our experienced tutor, Luis. The book club is held by the school, Spanish Marks. The maximum number of participants is 12, so we recommend to book today as there is great demand!

EVENT DESCRIPTION:

We have a relaxed atmosphere, with most of the discussion in Spanish. It is an event for those who love literature and Spanish, and want to spend an evening discussing the chosen book, whilst enjoying light Mexican bites. It is not a language lesson, but an informal discussion about the book and it's themes, allowing you to practice Spanish in a warm, friendly and culturally-rich setting! Receive a copy of "La muerte de Artemio Cruz" when you purchase a ticket, so you can read it in advance. Buy before 25th February, to receive free delivery of the book. Tickets bought after this date will need to collect the book from Hotel Strand Continental, 143 Strand, WC2R 1JA.

ABOUT 'LA MUERTE DE ARTEMIO CRUZ' AND LEVEL OF SPANISH:

Hailed as a masterpiece since its publication in 1962, "La Muerte De Artemio Cruz" is Carlos Fuentes's haunting voyage into the soul of modern Mexico.

Artemio Cruz, a corrupt soldier, politician, journalist, tycoon, and lover, lies on his deathbed, recalling the shaping events of his life, from the Mexican Revolution through to the development of the Institutional Revolutionary Party.

The book club is suitable for those who have at least an intermediate level of Spanish. If you can understand approximately 80% of the below extract we recommend you joining us for this session!:

Yo despierto....Me despierta el contacto de ese objeto frío con el miembro. No sabía que a veces se puede orinar involuntariamente. Permanezco con los ojos cerrados. Las voces más cercanas no se escuchan. Si abro los ojos, ¿podré escucharlas?...Pero los párpados me pesan: dos plomos, cobres en la lengua, martillos en el oído, una...una como plata oxidada en la respiración.

FUTURE EVENTS:

The book club is held once a month, with a different book each month. We change the country, theme and style of literature, and always choose highly acclaimed books by great authors. ¡Esperamos verte pronto!
