Event Details

The oil and gas industry generally states that there is no other “asset” more important or valuable than its people. However, some would argue that when it comes to people versus deliverables, priorities change.

The Another Perspective on Risk Conference, organised by SPE Aberdeen’s Another Perspective (AP) Committee, looks to examine the human factors that contribute to risks and accidents, but this time from a perspective never addressed before, that of the human risk. "One way, one culture, one direction" are long out-dated when it comes to risk perception, identification and assessment. Where does the technical risk stop and the human one takes over?

The Lord Cullen Report, published in 1990, created a tipping point in the industry’s approach to Process and Occupational Safety and set the groundwork for a revolution in the Health and Safety culture of the oil industry – but that was over 20 years ago. Are we approaching the time of another inquiry or can a genuine dialogue actually be enacted by the industry itself?

Buncefield, Texas City, Macondo, Montara and others have, beyond any doubt, shown that another ‘epidemic type’ change for the approach to and management of risk is required.

The conference seeks to address the following points:

  • How do we manage the fear of reporting and reluctance to challenge the norm and the perception that organisational culture is the panacea to all ills?
  • What can we do to deliberately start our own, industry driven, positive revolution?
  • What is The Next Tipping Point?

Why should you attend?

  • No industry conference has ever focussed primarily on human risk and this conference is a first for SPE Aberdeen
  • This conference brings together a wealth of expertise and knowledge from across the world and the subject is examined across geographical boundaries, by industry experts
  • No conference has ever taken such an integrated approach looking at all major safety incidents combined.
  • No other industry conference has been aimed to start a genuine dialogue on human risk, addressing dangerous stereotypes: “we all perceive risks in the same manner” and “high risk equals low reward”
  • No other conference has ever attempted to answer whether the issue of risk acceptance in operations can pass a critical quantifiable and qualifiable level, one beyond which further risks begin to be ignored
  • No other conference has addressed the fear of retaliation and its influence on our risk perception

SPE Aberdeen

SPE Aberdeen

The SPE Aberdeen Section works closely with industry, government, professional institutes and academia to advance the learning of its members in all aspects of the energy industry; offshore, onshore and internationally.

Our members are active in a wide range of professions within our industry and we hold cross disciplinary seminars with our colleagues in other institutes and organisations.

We seek to provide a channel of information on the energy industry to the Scottish community in general, and young people in schools and universities in particular.

Young and old, male and female and just about every nationality you can think of, we have over 2000 members, 4 student chapters and a very strong Section organisation with more than 70 active volunteers.  Our aim is to enhance members' industry experience and help them achieve their true potential.

SPE in the UK

The SPE has around 4,500 members in the UK, each of whom is affiliated to one of three sections in Aberdeen, London and Great Yarmouth. Between them they represent the many disciplines involved in petroleum engineering.
