Event description

Description

The study morning will start with an overview of the links between written and spoken language disorders (including diagnostic labels), as well as looking at the overlap between Developmental Language Disorder/Speech Sound Disorder and Dyslexia. There will be an opportunity to look at a typical profile, as well as red flags for Speech and Language issues, followed by a look at a case study of a young person with overlapping disorders and ideas for interventions.

Presenter:

Leona is a qualified Speech and Language Therapist. She worked for the NHS for 14 years, predominantly with children in a variety of settings. She specialised in speech and language disorders and completed her dyslexia diploma in 2002. For the last 8 years, Leona has been employed directly by a secondary academy as a Speech and Language Therapist and Dyslexia Teacher within their speech, language and dyslexia centre. She is also a senior lecturer at a university in Kent, teaching on a Speech and Language Therapy training course. In 2015 she completed her masters with the University of Sheffield, her thesis covering the impact of sleep and off-line processing on word learning. Leona has a special interest in the link between speech and language disorders and written language difficulties. She has a thriving private practice specialising in supporting young people with speech, spoken and written language disorders. Leona has also provided extensive training within school and health settings, co-written three articles, reviewed materials for reviewers, carried out action-research projects and presented her work at conference and to special interest groups.
