Event description

Description

"In the world but not of it; the challenge to healthcare chaplains to become professionalised and still retain their prophetic role of speaking truth to power"

Together we will consider whether we, as faith communities, service users or health care professionals can challenge mental health practices and service delivery which oppose our beliefs in people being treated with dignity and of having inherent worth as individuals. This event will explore the changing role of mental health chaplains and in particular consider ideas from Stephen’s book “Pastoral Care and Liberation Theology” and his article “Chaplaincy as Public Theology” (please see Stephen’s article available on the Forum website).

Stephen Pattison is an interdisciplinary scholar trained in theology, ethics and public service management and a part time worker at University of Birmingham where he directs the Doctor of Practical Theology programme which focusses on developing skills of critical reflective practice. A former health care chaplain, he has taught health and social welfare as well as practical theology for many years. His publications include Pastoral Care and Liberation Theology, The Faith of the Managers, Shame, and (edited with others) Values in Professional Practice, Emerging Values in Health Care, and, most recently, Values in Health and Social Care: An Introductory Workbook.

NB. 5 minutes walk from Camden Town station.
