Event description

Description

Speech and communication lies at the heart of classroom practice. It is the predominant way in which teachers provide instruction and support to their students, and is central to how well our learners engage with the
curriculum.

Concerns around children’s oracy often centre around their ability to talk confidently, appropriately and sensitively. However, oracy in the classroom can also be a process, where students learn through talk, deepening their understanding through peer and teacher dialogue.

Improving oracy in classrooms can improve outcomes (EEF toolkit research shows +5 months extra progress for oral language interventions) and importantly has a role in promoting social equity.

Overview:
This session will explore the importance of developing oracy and the current successful approaches being used in classrooms and schools nationally and internationally.

In this session you will:

  • Explore key research
  • Take away classroom strategies for dialogic teaching
  • Prepare for embedding a whole-school culture of oracy
  • Review case studies to help you to streamline implementation in your context.

This session will be practical with group activities and access to resources. Please bring along your own device to be able to access these in the session.
