Creative Arts Workshop (11.30 - 12.50 & 13.20 - 14.40) Run by a respected Nigerian artist, learn about Nigerian non-verbal communication symbols and their counterparts from other cultures, through a brief and engaging presentation. Then dive into drawing and colouring exercises to embolden your imagination with this rich heritage.

Talking Drum Workshop (11.30 - 12.50 & 13.20 - 14.40) Facilitated by a Master Drummer, this workshop will explore basic rhythms, poly-rhythms and how talking drums are used to communicate, using rhythms and proverbs.

Performance (15.10 – 16.10) 'A Present for the Women of Uli’ is an original performance written by IROKO Theatre’s Artistic Director Alex Oma-Pius and inspired by research carried out as part of the ‘Speaking Without Voice’ project. It is a funny, informative and light-hearted production with interactive music, song and dance.

All activities are interactive and suitable for age 7 and above!

Remember to BOOK WORKSHOPS AHEAD TO AVOID DISSAPOINTMENT!

***

IROKO Theatre’s National Lottery Heritage Funded project ‘Speaking Without Voice’ has involved researching four Nigerian precolonial nonverbal communication systems (Aroko, Nsibidi, Uli and the Talking Drums) - their historical, political and socio-cultural functions, contemporary use and transnational links, including their significant and unidentified presence in Nigerian arts and heritage in the UK. The Sharing Day and performance is the culmination of this research and a unique opportunity to engage with this underexplored heritage!
