Description

Special Education Needs (Disability) Update (SEN[D]); a half day course to refresh key skills and raise awareness of the requirements / expectations for all teachers regarding the new ‘0-25 SEN Code of Practice’. The course is comprised of two elements: 1) The SEN(D) Update and; 2) Teaching Strategies to support SEN(D) pupils. It would useful if attendees had completed Simply Education’s online Safeguarding tutorial PRIOR to attending the SEN(D) Update course.

Course Overview

SEN(D) Update

The ‘SEN(D) Update course will clarify the latest arrangements for supporting SEN(D) pupils in schools, with focus given to teachers’ roles and responsibilities in relation to care, support and ensuring progress of these children. There is a ‘no excuse’ culture in place, with every teacher expected to do their part in helping children with a range of extra challenges to meet their targets, and in doing so, helping the school meet theirs. The course aims to develop understanding of the underlying principles of the new ‘0-25 SEN Code of Practice’, and looks to identify and offer strategies to dismantle the barriers to learning experienced by SEN(D) children.

Teaching Strategies to Support SEN(D) pupils

The teaching strategies covered, if employed well, should help your SEN(D) pupils feel more secure, enjoy their learning more and therefore make better progress. The strategies discussed include:

  • Active learning
  • Group-work, pair work, pair-share etc.
  • Kinaesthetic learning
  • HAP, MAP & LAP materials and challenges
  • Scaffolded (basketball*) questioning
  • Plenary responsibilities
  • Assessment for Learning (AfL)

These are of course only a narrow selection of the teaching strategies you will need. Look out for our other courses for more information.
